I was struck with instant charm, when I first saw Schuurbain by Atelier Vans-Vanbelle. This barn is pure genius in its simpleness. Belgian countryside is full of traditional or selfmade sheds and barns. Their uglyness is part of our national heritage. This one stands out, although the basic form is left traditional. The architects succeeded in designing a nice and aeshtetic barn with basic materials. Wood, hay, concrete. The concrete walls were encased in a jute fabric, thus referring to barn and country life. Unusual is the open feel of the barn, thanks to the polycarbonate roof.
